Arthur Darkin

Peter Bloomfield with a little digging by Margaret Foote

Arthur Darkin was born at Isleham Fen in Cambridgeshire on 22 June 1852. At an early age the family moved to London. He joined the NLR at the age of 14 on 26th July 1866. His career began in the Locomotive Department and he stayed in that department until he retired. In late 1869, aged 17, he ceased being waged staff when his pay went from 12 shillings per week to £30 a year and he became an assistant clerk in the stores department. He remained in the stores issue set-up until he was made Chief Clerk in early 1890 when his salary jumped from £130 to £200 a year. In addition he received allowances totalling £30 for extra work caused by the audit of the locomotive stores accounts (£5 twice a year) and the annual clothing contract (£20 once a year). In 1909, when the LNWR took over the management of the NLR, he was retained as a ‘consultant’ at a salary of £170 a year, until he qualified for Railway Clearing Superannuation Allowance on his 60th birthday (22nd June 1912). It could have been that the ‘consultancy’ did not last very long as the the LNWR moved him to the ‘North London Pension List’ at £170 a year from 1st April 1909.

His father, a labourer with a gas company, died, aged 37, the year Arthur started with the NLR. On the 18th August 1877 he married Martha Newson, a Limehouse girl who was the same age. She was working as a milliner. They had three children, one of them dying in childhood. The other two, a girl, Effie, born 1884, and a boy, Arthur, born a year later, became a county council school teacher and a clerk with a gas company, respectively. A domestic servant was employed from, presumably, when he became chief clerk in 1890 and had a £70 pay rise. During the 1890’s the family moved from Mile End to Osborne Road in Forest Gate, where they remained for the rest of their lives.

In 1897 he had a severe illness and was invalided on full pay from 17th September 1897 to 22nd November 1897 As a special case, the Company gave him a donation of £50 towards the expenses he had incurred in connexion with the illness.

In 1911, Effie, aged 27, and Arthur, aged 26, were still single and still living at home. Arthur and his wife died within three months of each other in 1926, Arthur on the 28th January and Martha on 21st April, aged 73. They had been married for over 48 years. When they died, Arthur left nearly £700 and Martha over a £1000.
