Abbreviations

Early railways loved long names, the North London Railway started as the East and West India Docks and Birmingham Junction Railway before seeing sense, so, alas, it is time to learn some abbreviations.

Railway Names

Initial letters, with ampersands and often with the final R omitted, eg, LNW for London & North Western Railway
EWIDBJ East and West India Docks and Birmingham Junction Railway
GE Great Eastern Railway
GN Great Northern Railway
GW Great Western Railway
HJR Hampstead Junction Railway
LNW London and North Western Railway
LSW London and South Western Railway
LTS London Tilbury and Southend Railway
Mid Midland Railway
NLR If you have read this far and do not know what it means I suggest that you give up here and now!
NSWJ North and South West Junction Railway
